No calculators on AMC 2008 and beyond

The American Mathematics Competitions, or AMC, has quietly amended its rules for calculator usage. (Incidentally, the AMC is undergoing a major overhaul of its website, check it out!)

Starting in 2008, no calculators will be allowed on the AMC 8 / 10 / 12.

I am not sure whether this would prompt similar rules changes for NYSML and ARML, but I expect the number of AIME qualifiers to drop noticeably next year. After all, I myself depended on the TI-89 quite a bit when I took the AMC exams!

    Completely banning all calculators? Are you sure they aren’t just banning really powerful stuff like the 89? If so, that’s definitely overkill. Some of the more difficult problems on the AMC will then require an expansive knowledge and expertise. You won’t be able to check your answer, nor easily compute many sequences.

    What in the world!
    We need calculators to go faster on the test and to check work!
    What’s up with those people!
    The only reason I was able to get 24/25 last year was because I used the calculator a lot!
